Ebenezer Samuel Akinola was born on December 1, 1968, in Ibadan, Nigeria. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Painting from the University of Benin in 1989. A highly acclaimed Nigerian artist and curator, Akinola is renowned for his expertise in portraiture, as well as African figurative and abstract art. His artistic journey began with a deeply rooted passion for creative expression.
Akinola’s artistic focus revolves around elevating Black culture and engaging with — or challenging — notions related to race, gender, beauty, identity, contemporary politics, and African spirituality. Portraits and figure studies hold a special place in his practice, where he skillfully balances realistic and abstract elements. The intricate details in his work add depth and highlight key areas of interest.
Throughout his career, Akinola has received significant commissions, including portraits of former Nigerian leaders such as Nnamdi Azikwe, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Olusegun Obasanjo. These portraits are prominently displayed at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Lagos.
Akinola has actively participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Nigeria and abroad. His contributions to the art world extend beyond the canvas, as he has also mentored several contemporary Nigerian painters. Akinola’s influence is evident in the work of artists such as Oluwole Omofemi, Boluwatife Victoria Lawal, Raji Mohammed, Adeola Adegbenro, Olatunji Awoyemi, and Ibraheem Sodiq.
Drawing inspiration from various African cultures, Akinola incorporates elements such as Northern Nigerian turbans and Southern wrappers into his pieces. His works reflect a connection to traditional values and a sense of community, with migration being a recurring theme.
Based in Ibadan, Akinola’s artistic journey is marked by significant achievements, including exhibitions in renowned galleries and participation in international events. His work is featured in prestigious collections such as the H Foundation in Madagascar, Société Ivoirienne de Banque in Côte d’Ivoire, and the Fondation Blachère in France and Senegal. Akinola’s artistic expressions elevate and celebrate Black culture, challenge societal norms, and offer a unique perspective on contemporary issues in Africa.
